What makes a successful sustainability career? Yesterday, at The Conduit, our colleague Hannah Phang moderated an inspiring panel discussion to answer this question. We explored what’s driving change in the sustainability space, the skills in demand, and how individuals can carve out meaningful careers while making a positive impact.

The Now Work is on a mission to connect sustainability expertise with organisations and projects that need it. With a global network of over 2,000 specialists, ranging from former Chief Sustainability Officers to consultants, technical experts and creatives, we’re helping organisations solve sustainability challenges, build resilient teams, and drive systemic change.

Yesterday’s panel was a chance to share actionable advice with the next generation of sustainability professionals. Hannah sat down with Helen Fisher (Managing Director at Context Group), Nicu Calcea (Senior Data Investigator at Global Witness), Emmanuel Hanley-Lloyd (Global Public Affairs & Policy Manager at ClientEarth) and Milijov Vagic (Chief Strategy Officer at SamudraOceans) to hear their excellent insights into accessing a variety of sustainability careers.

Here are our key takeaways:

Sustainability Career Trends

1. Sustainability is No Longer Niche
Sustainability has moved into the mainstream. Businesses are embracing it, driven by the dual forces of investor expectations and employee demand. Organisations can no longer afford to treat sustainability as an afterthought—it’s now a core business imperative.

2. Data + Storytelling = Impact
The ability to translate complex data into relatable, impactful narratives is one of the most valuable skills in the sector. If your audience can’t grasp your message quickly—whether it’s investors, customers, or colleagues—you’ll lose them. A great test: Can you explain it to a friend at the pub? If not, simplify.

3. Specialists and Generalists are Both Essential
The sustainability landscape is growing increasingly specialised, with roles spanning everything from climate tech to biodiversity strategy. But generalists remain crucial for connecting the dots and fostering collaboration across silos. The most successful teams combine both.

Key Tips for Sustainability Success

Communication Skills are Critical
Simplifying complex ideas into accessible, relatable messages is an art. Great communicators bridge the gap between technical expertise and stakeholder understanding—an essential skill for driving change. The sustainability sector also thrives on collaboration. Attend events, join LinkedIn groups, and connect with people whose work inspires you. Networking can open doors to opportunities you never expected.

Be Ready to Upskill
Emerging sectors like climate tech, regenerative agriculture, and sustainability coding are booming. Staying relevant means being proactive in filling your skill gaps. Consider courses, certifications, or volunteer work to build expertise in the areas that interest you.

Transferable Skills Are Gold
Your career path doesn’t have to be linear. Jobs in seemingly unrelated fields—retail, hospitality, the arts—can teach you skills that are invaluable in sustainability, like problem-solving, communication, and adaptability. Frame your past experiences in a way that aligns with the role you’re targeting. If you’re not currently working in this sector, take the initiative to try volunteering as a sustainability champion in your current role.

Persistence is Key
Rejection is part of the journey, and even the most seasoned professionals have faced it. Tailor your CV and cover letter to every job, show your passion for the role, a strong understanding of the company and their previous work, and keep applying. A positive attitude, backed by persistence, goes a long way.

Keep Your “Why” Front and Center
Sustainability work can feel overwhelming. Revisit your purpose regularly to stay motivated and grounded. Your "why" is what will sustain you through challenges and setbacks.

Final Thoughts: Keep Moving Forward

The road to a successful sustainability career isn’t always straightforward, but every step matters. Whether you’re applying for your dream job, gaining experience in adjacent fields, or upskilling in emerging sectors, stay committed to your purpose and curious about what’s next.
